South Korean giant LG has long established itself on the good side of the smartphone market, proof of this is a joint issue with Google, the Nexus 5 (and before that even Nexus 4 ). But in the tablet segment the company’s success can not be called outstanding. In recent years the market has presented only a couple of models and one modification (Optimus Pad LTE / without LTE, as well as the G-Slate for the provider T-Mobile). This year, the Koreans have decided on another attempt to occupy a new place in the market by releasing LG G Pad 8.3.

Specifications LG G Pad 8.3 (LG V-500)

Many utilities, including CPU-Z, err in determining the SoC, which is used in the plate, and relate it to the family S4 Pro. This is due to an illogical nomenclature SoC systems Qualcomm: newer Snapdragon 600 (8064) is taken as the Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) (installed, by the way, in the new Nexus 7).

  • Model Number: LG-V500

Among the tablets we have considered only one where a similar resolution is found in smaller diagonal – Google Nexus 7 second generation. Almost all other Full HD-plates are a ten. But for the table we picked a couple of “intermediate” devices, which in this perspective can be ranked including our LG G Pad 8.3.

Options

In addition to the tablet, the box contains a manual with warranty booklet, AC adapter and USB-cable.

Design

Appearance G Pad consistent with what we expect to see in such a plate diagonally. Having approximately the same thickness as the Google Nexus 7 (2013), and 12 mm greater width tablet LG is convenient for grasping hand in portrait orientation. In this case the Korean manufacturer has chosen right position.

The front panel contains the manufacturer’s logo and the camera lens.

Most of the rear panel there is an aluminum plate, bordered with plastic. The common solution, which gives the tablet “expensive” and diluting the ubiquitous plastic. Peculiarity of the LG tablet is that plastic encloses the entire metal panel – and the rear edge of the insert to form a single piece, which has a positive effect on the overall reliability of the design.

On the back side there is a camera lens and stereo speakers. They will be somewhat screened, only if you hold the tablet in landscape orientation with the left hand. Dynamics are much louder than most tablets, and the sound quality is high.

The top side is the memory card slot, a 3.5 mm output for headphones and, surprisingly, the infrared port.

From the opposite side you will find Micro-USB connector in the center and slightly to the side of the microphone.

On the right side are mechanical lock button and change the volume with a short and concise course.

In fact, LG can be attributed to new entrants to the tablet market. And Engineers have designed this third device suitably: practically they have stopped experimenting,  while concentrating on the build quality. It is on a very high level, no more or less noticeable backlash, no other deffects we have not found.

Screen

The front surface of the screen is in the form of the glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, there is a very effective anti-glare filter , which is to reduce the brightness of the reflection is slightly better than the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter, we compare it with him).

For clarity, we present the photos that in both tablet screen off a white surface reflects:

Because of differences in the color tone of reflection difficult to visually estimate the magnitude of dimming reflection, however, the statistics in the editor shows that the screen on LG G Pad 8.3 is slightly darker, but the difference is statistically significant (the average luminance value 79.9 against 80.7) . Also note that the visual screen in LG G Pad 8.3 off looks slightly turbid than the screen Nexus 7 since the first mold surface under glass and lightly brushed a little more side reflects light.

Ghosting objects reflected in the screen LG G Pad 8.3 is very weak, it indicates that there is no screen between the layers of the air gap. On the outer surface of the screen is a special oleophobic (grease repellent) coating (very effective , probably better what the Nexus 7), so that fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

In manual brightness control a maximum concentration of about 310 cd / m ² , and the minimum – 4 cd / m ² . The maximum value is not very high, but given the good anti-glare properties, in bright daylight, the screen must be sufficiently legible. In complete darkness, brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. Has an automatic brightness control sensor light (located on the right eye from the front camera). This function depends on the position of the slider to adjust the brightness. If he is on 100%, the brightness of the screen actually does not change (remains at 316-318 cd / m ²). If you set the slider to 50%, in total darkness Auto Brightness function dims to 8.5 cd / m ² (read from the screen is difficult, but still possible), under artificial light lit office installs a 115 cd / m ² (acceptable), and in very bright environments increases to a maximum of 315 cd / m ². If the controller is set to 0%, in the first two conditions above, the brightness is at the minimum value, and only in very bright surroundings rises to 303 cd / m ². If you set the slider to 75%, then the following values: 33, 170 and 319 cd / m ² (perhaps this is the most comfortable set of values). It turns out that an adequate enough job of this function is provided only at an intermediate position of the slider. At low brightness backlight modulation is virtually absent, so there is no screen flicker.

This tablet uses a matrix type IPS . Micrographs show the typical structure of subpixels for IPS:

Testing the display tablet LG G Pad 8.3

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting colors and without significant color shift even at large deviations from the perpendicular to the view screen. For comparison we present the photos that the screens Nexus 7 and LG G Pad 8.3 derived the same image, with the brightness of both screens installed about 200 cd / m ².

Perpendicular to the screen:

Seen, especially in shades of skin color rendition that is slightly different, but it’s the only conclusion that can be drawn on the photograph.

The white box:

An angle of approximately 45 ° to the plane of the screen:

As you can see that the colors are not “floated” in both tablets. Then the white box:

Brightness at an angle in both tablets decreased significantly (about four times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of LG G Pad 8.3 drop in brightness a little more (brightness by 224 against 237 photographs the Nexus 7). At the same color tone changed slightly.

Black box rejecting diagonally greatly lightens and becomes red-purple hue. Photo with Nexus 7 for comparison it shows (the brightness of the white areas in both tablets the same!)

Look at perpendicular uniform black field average, as on the border of the screen there are local areas with high brightness of the black field (bright spots – it’s dead pixels on the sensor of the camera, the comparison again with the Nexus 7):

Contrast ratio (approximately in the center of the screen) high – about 960:1 . Built on 32 points gamma curve revealed no obstruction nor light, nor in the shadows, and the rate approximating power function is 2.46, which is more than the standard value of 2.2, with a real gamma curve deviates strongly from the power dependence:

Due to the aggressive dynamically adjust the brightness according to the nature of the displayed image (in a light figure brightness increases, decreases in the dark) obtained dependence of the brightness of the hue (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out at the serial output shades of gray on the screen. For this reason, a series of tests – definition of contrast and response time, a comparison of black illumination angles – we spent the derivation of specific patterns rather than plain fields in full screen.

Color gamut is narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix filters lightly blended components to each other. Spectra confirm this:

Looking at the chart coverage and impressions of working with the tablet, the most recognizable colors – shades of skin – do not lose saturation, so most of the color images (drawings, photographs and films), focused on space sRGB (such as the vast majority) have more or less natural saturation. Balance shades of gray on the scale is good since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (? E) is less than 10, that consumer device is considered an acceptable figure. In this variation? E and especially the color temperature is small, it also has a positive effect on the visual perception of color balance. Dark areas of the gray scale can not be ignored, as there hue does not matter much, and the color characteristics of the measurement error at low brightness large.

Dimming range at this screen is quite wide and very effective anti-glare filter that allows you to comfortably use your tablet as a clear day on the street, and in total darkness. The user is relieved of the need to manually adjust the brightness, since the corresponding function copes with this task (but pick up the correct position brightness slider still have), contributing to the conservation of battery power in addition. The advantages of the screen are also effective oleophobic coating and good color balance . Unfortunately, the stability of black eyes to the deviation from the perpendicular to the surface of the screen is low and uniform black field is far from ideal . However, these two flaws are smoothed somewhat aggressive and nondisconnectable adjustment, which in dark scenes lowers the backlight brightness.

Operating system

LG G Pad 8.3 running Android 4.2.2. Testing was conducted on firmware V50010a. It is available to the user of the total 11.03 16 GB of internal memory.

One has only to turn on the tablet, and it is clear that a significant contribution to the absorption of internal memory has made a proprietary shell LG.

Tablet applications can be run directly from the screen to unlock it. This process is accompanied by a cute and smoothly running animation.

LG optimized control labels. Catching one of them, you can not just remove it (as in the standard version of Android), but the corresponding application. To do this, simply drag the shortcut to the next area “On the application.” In the window that will contain information about the program and delete button.

If you hold the shortcut on the desktop, after some time in the corner it will appear purple circle with a brush. He brings up a menu replacement icons. You can choose from already available or quickly cut your own from any of the saved image.

In the settings of the tablet has a few pleasant extra points. “Smart Screen” stays on when the front camera recognizes a face. “Smart Video” is paused if the person is not recognized. You can change the font of the panel and Android (when you first start, you can choose a more traditional scheme of “white on black”).

Changes were made and a virtual keyboard. In an embodiment, the LG unit moved many alphabetic characters that can be selected by holding down the appropriate button.

The list of special features. Users can, for example, inverted color transform or mono to stereo headphone jack.

Another interesting feature LG G Pad 8.3 is to create a guest user with a choice of active when unlocking. Guest powers are limited.

At the G Pad installed and additional software. There Dictionary DioDict, available in Play Market. Tablet users can free download one of the paid dictionaries. The second, more interesting program for translators is already exclusive LG. Quick Translator translates photographed text using either the Internet or downloaded dictionaries that you want to buy.

OCR works well in one line, and when it is necessary to choose a larger piece of text, obtained mostly incoherent character set.

Present and its own Task Manager widget download RAM, enabling one touch clear memory.

Integrated Phonebook has a good set of tools for creating handwritten notes. And by the way, do it on the display G Pad easy and pleasant.

Capabilities built-in IR ports are implemented using application QuickRemote.

In addition to the remote control, the manufacturer focuses on several proprietary features. G Pad 8.3 understands this gesture as a shift in the direction of three fingers – QSlide. Open the application can not be closed, but simply move the screen with three fingers left. And repeat it more than once. If necessary, call application or close enough to fulfill the opposite gesture, and all deferred program displays “ladder.” Deferred applications are suspended, so that the “defer”, for example, to load the game level will fail.

Through the retractable menu called gadgets. The user can change their position, size and opacity. In the list of applications includes mini video player, browser, calendar, e-mail client, editor notes, the conductor and a calculator.

Continues to set proprietary functions QPair. This application connects to a smartphone (on Android 4.1 and later) via Bluetooth, to be notified of incoming calls on him and SMS (with the ability to answer a text message). In addition, through social networks QPair news arrives, synchronized notes QuickMemo and implemented Wi-Fi-tetering via smartphone tablet.

In addition to stand-alone applications in G Pad has a few more comfortable and “chips”. Among them we note:

  • on / off the display with two quick touches;
  • View the contents of the tablet through a PC connected to the same network;
  • Miracast – picture and sound output to an external display device;
  • SmartShare Beam – sharing multimedia content with devices LG;
  • backup all settings, personal data and applications.

These software applications available in the center of LG. In addition, the device has an alternative app store LG Smart World. Turning on of the LG G Pad 8.3 takes about 25 seconds.

Stability of the system is at a very high level. No slow downs, we did not notice the standard elements in Android, and shell extensions at LG.

Selected competitors us close enough to G Pad display settings, but in terms of computing power our hero clearly in front of all, except, perhaps, Google Nexus 7 (2013). Let’s see what the benchmarks show.

To expand the horizon of browser tests we used a Samsung Galaxy Note N9005 3 on the newest platform Qualcomm, Snapdragon 800.

LG G Pad 8.3 (600 Snapdragon (8064M)) Google Nexus 7 (2013) (Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064)) Pipo Max Pro-M7 3G (Rockchip RK3188) Samsung Galaxy Note N9005 3 (Snapdragon 800 (8974))

JavaScript-tests demonstrate that opportunities are not far from 600 Snapdragon S4 Pro. Moreover, in one of the three tests Nexus even won. A much larger gap between fixed Snapdragon 600 and 800: Galaxy Note was almost twice as fast.

From this review, we begin to use the second version of Google Octane. It added a new test that assesses the work of Type code asm.js. LG G Pad 8.3 scored in the new version of the benchmark 2138 points.

Run complex benchmarks. There is also the completion – Antutu X Edition. A special version of the benchmark was a back step action producers unfair methods Screw results.

Asphalt 8: On the rise operates normally
NOVA 3 operates normally
Dead Trigger 2 operates normally
Shadowgun: The Leftover Pack operates normally
Dungeon Hunter 4 operates normally
Max Payne Mobile operates normally
Need for Speed: Most Wanted operates normally

The review Voyo A15 we mentioned error 5002 that occurs when you start Mass Effect: Infiltrator. She met us in the G Pad. In the display settings, we chose the tablet aspect ratio adjustment for individual programs, and Mass Effect earned. Nice touch.

In general, the test for real gaming applications passed the tablet as “excellent.” And judging by the ease with which he coped with the task of gaming potential G Pad 8.3 will suffice at least for the near future.

Video Playback

This tablet has support for picture and sound output to an external device using adapters SlimPort (or Mobility DisplayPort), connects to the Micro-USB. For testing, we used the monitor LG IPS237L . When using the monitor and the adapter output is at 1920 × 1080 at 60 frames / sec. When the tablet landscape orientation display output on the screen is carried out in landscape orientation, and the image on the monitor is a refinement of the boundaries of the screen height (displayed on the sides of the narrow black field) and is an exact copy of the tablet screen. When the portrait orientation tablet output to the monitor screen also performed in portrait orientation, and the image on the monitor screen is inscribed in the boundary adjustment, and the left and right displays broad black field.

HDMI audio output (in this case, the sounds could be heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, as in the monitor speaker is not) and has a good quality. In this multimedia sound through the speaker of the tablet is not found, and to adjust the volume buttons on the body of the tablet. Connected to the adapter plate SlimPort charging (in slow motion), the adapter SlimPort need to be powered through an available slot in his Micro-USB.

The results of video testing are summarized in the following table:

Note: If in both columns uniformity and Deletions exhibited “green” estimation, this means that most likely watching movies artifacts caused by uneven and skipping frames interleaved or not visible at all, or the number and will not noticeably affect for comfortable viewing. “Red” mark note potential problems associated with the reproduction of the relevant files.

By O frame video picture quality on the screen of the tablet is good, since the frames (or group of blocks) are derived from a more or less uniform alternating intervals. In the case of files, 50 and 60 frame / s strictly skipped every other frame, which is not very noticeable. Files with 1080p 60 frame / s can not be played. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 (1080p) image on the tablet screen video displays actually exactly the width of the screen, one-to-one pixel, that is, in the original resolution. Displayed on the screen brightness range corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 – just a pair of shades in the shadows and into the light do not differ in brightness from black and white respectively.

With the monitor connected via SlimPort when playing video tenured player video image is displayed only in landscape orientation, with the monitor after a certain time after the start of playback, the picture only video, but on the tablet screen always displays only information elements and virtual controls. When playing video files with a resolution of Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels) on the monitor screen displays the actual video right on the border of the screen while maintaining the true proportions, and resolution match the resolution of Full HD. Displayed on the monitor brightness range is 16-235 standard range, that is in the shadows and highlights are all the shades of gradation. The test results on the monitor display shown in the table above in block «SlimPort». The output quality is good, but not perfect. However, to playback Full HD video 24 frames / s no complaints, so you can watch movies. Note that when using the player MX Player on the screen in the screen buttons deduced white stripe, but in the case files 50 and 60 frame / s frame passes were very few.

It turns out that connect to external monitors, televisions and projectors, carried out using an adapter SlimPort, can be used for playing games, watching movies, display web pages, and other activities, which benefits from a multiple increase in the size of the screen.

Lets estimate the five standard video playbacks:

Format Container, video, sound MX Video Player Regular video player
DVDRip AVI, XviD, 720 × 400, 2200 kbit / s, MP3 + AC3 output normally output normally
Web-DL SD AVI, XviD, 720 × 400, 1400 kbit / s, MP3 + AC3 output normally output normally
Web-DL HD MKV, H.264, 720 × 1280, 3000 kbit / s, AC3 output normally output normally
BDRip 720p MKV, H.264, 720 × 1280, 4000 kbit / s, AC3 output normally output normally
BDRip 1080p MKV, H.264, 1920 × 1080 8000 kbit / s, AC3 output normally output normally

LG G Pad supports hardware decoding format tracks AC3. Standard video player tablet has some handy extra features. Being application QSlide, he can curl up in a box with adjustable size. In one touch you can make a screenshot, lock screen, select video size (the original “best fit” or full screen). Broadcast is also available on the external display via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and transfer content via SmartShare Beam.

Feature of the player is to navigate the timeline. If you select a point on it, playback does not start right away with it. The thumbnail appears, which will need to click to start playback from the selected point.

Wireless Support

LG G Pad 8.3 supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n (2,4 GHz + 5 GHz). Judging by the speed for these purposes in the plate installed one antenna operating in single channel mode. Connecting external storage to the tablet is not supported.

Camera

On board the LG G Pad 8.3 taken by two cameras. Front takes pictures at a maximum resolution of 1280 × 800 and workmanship hardly claim to something:

Maximum resolution pictures rear camera is 2560 × 1920. The quality of its images can be evaluated as good.

Text is fulfilled rear camera slightly uneven but generally good.

Video (1920 × 1080, MPEG-4 (Base Media), 29,535 fps, 16,7 MB / s), is captured by the tablet, pleased us more than photos. The reason, perhaps, for a very decent tablet cameras bitrate.

Camera application has a few extra features. Among them stands out Cheese Shutter – triggering the camera “by ear”, in recognition of one of the five key words. On the volume buttons can be assigned to photographing or zoom. Finally, there are multiple shutter sounds.

Autonomy

In the tablet LG G Pad 8.3 installed battery capacity of 4600 mA · h

In the settings you can enable power-saving mode start at 30% battery charge. Alas, this option does not optimize fuel consumption, but simply disables wireless networks limits the brightness and automatic shut-off reduces the screen. Tests conducted battery life without her.

Here we come upon some disappointment. Runtimes from LG G Pad 8.3 is considerably less than the Nexus 7, and the difference in size, display it can not be blamed. Android reports show that more than usual at the rate of the battery takes on a display device. This is indirectly proved by the game mode where G Pad yet caught up with the Nexus: here display consumes relatively smallest amount of energy.

LG G Pad 8.3 can be charged from a PC, but there is a high probability that when connected via USB 2.0 it will give notice of charging slow because of the low amperage. While charging adapter from the kit is just over four hours.

Conclusion

Tablet LG G Pad 8.3 can be recommended as an alternative to Google Nexus 7, if the diagonal Asus device seems not enough, with the caveat of battery life, which is a weak point of our LG G pad. The rest is tested well: the tablet that runs a stable version of Android 4.2.2, which is extended by the manufacturer, quality build and nice design, great compatibility with games, as well as a very good display. Although it is not without some flaws, but has the added benefit of a sensor can easily cope with handwriting.
